Our Daily Schedule

We begin our day by doing morning work to get our brains ready for school. Morning work will consist of daily review of topics that have already been covered earlier in the year or in the previous grade. This helps us to keep our skills fresh. Next, we gather on the carpet to read our morning message together, review our day, and discuss topics such as the weather, days of school, skip counting, parts of speech and sight words.

Math

First grade will be working very hard on learning about measurement, data collection, and addition and subtraction of larger numbers. They will also be working to become fluent with their math facts. Please practice these at home as often as you can. It makes learning easier as the year goes on and we move on to harder concepts. First graders will also be working on improving problem solving skills. This is a skill that will be worked on throughout the whole year.

For practice with math facts visit www.fun4thebrain.com.  There are some fun games for addition and subtraction!

Second graders will be working on addition and subtraction strategies with numbers within 1,000.  Also, throughout the year we will be working on problem solving strategies.

ELA

Over the next few weeks we will be reading some different types of stories. We will start off the month focusing on Dr. Seuss. We will move on to reading stories to increase our abilities to identify main idea and supporting details.

Both grades will be hearing many of the same stories, but are expected to respond to the text in ways appropriate to their grade level.

Centers

Centers are a very important part of our day, and a time that the kids really enjoy. This is a time when they rotate through various stations to work with material that we have covered in class, and that they can do independently. Our centers are Guided Reading, Listening, Word Families, Spelling, Word Work, Writing, Math, and Classroom Library. We do three centers a day. First and second graders may rotate through centers together, but will have different activities

and expectations.
