Tuesday is our scheduled Physical Education day.

Please come prepared in your PE uniform and sneakers.

Spring has finally sprung!  It feels so good to be  able to get ourdoors for our PE classes.  Please make sure your children wear appropriate footwear for class, to avoid falls as much as possible when playing.  We have been able to get use of the badminton net, and will begin throwing, catching and batting wiffle balls around, as well as learning the basics of baseball/softball.

Field Days is scheduled for June 16 at Highland Park.  We will have a variety of sports games, as well as the playground, carousel and swimming pool to enjoy.  More information to come.

After our February break we will concentrate on learning about increasing our heart rates through aerobic exercise, as well as strength training and flexibility.

We will begin a series of new games, such as "Think and Run" incorporating number and math skills during play.

In January we will exercise, stretch, build skills and play games such as floor hockey and "large marbles" for the younger children.  As of last school year, we have new floor hockey sticks for the students to use with foam ends which reduce injuries.  As always, sportsmanship is the number one goal above being a great athlete or winning.  We try our best to have fun with our friends.

Winter has unofficially begun and its COLD outside!  PE has moved indoors for the next few months.  Our Thanksgiving menu planning  gave us the opportunity to discuss and play games concentrating on the My Plate food groups and portion sizes.  We filled our plates during relay scooter games, and figured out food groups while playing Nutrition Bingo.

Grades Pre K through 2nd colored plates of their favorite foods, and 3rd throught 6th grades learned about making good food and beverage choices.

So far this school year, we have practiced skills in basketball, football, and soccer.

We have also gotten to use our large parachute, bouncing balls, animals (stuffed), using group efforts to make objects fly high, roll around, and bounce off.  We took turns running under, sitting under and trading places around the parachute.

We have discussed nutrition and played with our "Nutrition Road Signs" game.

Alphabet Hustle, matching like letters hidden under colorful domes, and balance practice walking on domes.

We have had one class using our scooters playing relay games, and playing individually  as well as with partners.

The students enjoy "Free Tuesday" once a month which allows them to make choices of numerous activities. This is a time for them to have unstructured and independent choices for play. It is interesting to see how creative they become with the "toys" supplied, as well as practicing their favorite sport or activity.

Sportsmanship is a priority during Physical Education Classes.

Being a good sport, encouraging classmates, and fair play are some of the positive attributes stressed throughout our classes.  Traditional sports and skills (such s basketball and soccer, floor hockey), as well as "new games" (like Fairy Godmother/Godfather and Roly Poly Oly, Steel the Pins) are incorporated throughout our year.   I also include the use of individual, simple, and inexpensive "toys" such as jump ropes, hula hoops and my favorite:  balls!

Please ask your child about the games we play.
